SURGICAL ORTHODONTICS

SURGICAL ORTHODONTICS

Surgical orthodontics or orthognathic surgery, is used to correct severe cases that include jaw discrepancies (small or large jaw sizes), bad bites (malocclusion) and incorrectly positioned jaws.

This specialised area of dentistry focuses on treating complex craniofacial cases that involve the mouth, jaw and face. If surgical orthodontics is indicated in your treatment process, Dr Bowe will work will together with an oral and maxillofacial surgeon to ensure that you receive the best possible care and treatment outcome.

Surgical orthodontics may be needed if the jaws are not correctly aligned and a patient needs orthodontic treatment as an adult. Occasionally surgical orthodontics is required when a teenager has a severe jaw discrepancy. Usually jaw growth is completed at age 16 in females and age 18 in males. In some cases, a proper bite cannot be achieved with orthodontic treatment alone. Braces are needed to move the teeth into the proper position within the jaws and orthognathic (jaw) surgery is then required to properly align the jaws in relation to each other
